High Power microwave transmitters radiate an appreciable amount of spurious output power, that is, frequency components other than the carrier frequency and the normal sideband modulation signals. It is necessary to use high power filters at the output of these transmitters that wil pass the carrier and normal modulation signals but suppress the spurious emmissions, and thus, keep them from causing interference in neighboring equipment. Coleman Micowave Company’s technical staff has vast and in-depth experience in the design and development of high power filters for radar and communications systems in waveguide and coaxial transmission lines.

A microwave signal contains microwave energy principally at its fundamental frequency. In addition there are undesirable multiples of that same frequency called harmonics. These higher frequency “harmonics” may be removed from the fundamental by use of a mechanical device called a Waffle Iron filter. A Waffle Iron filter is reflective by design and is a corrugated, varying impedance, waveguide filter with longitudinal slots which provide attenuation to all modes containing harmonic power.
Waffle Iron units have passband fractional bandwidths of 10-20%. Stop band attenuation is typically greater than 60 dB from the second through the fourth harmonic of the fundamental frequency.
Insertion loss and VSWR in the passband are minimal providing maximum transmission of power to the antenna. Waffle Iron designs are currently available in waveguide sizes from WR650 through WR42.

This filter was initially designed to isolate the fundamental transmitter out put signal from the local oscillator in high reliability Ka-BAND communications equipment. Constructed in WR42, similar to above photo, the filter exhibits low passband insertion loss and high isolation in the reject band.
