Reflective Filters
A microwave signal contains microwave energy principally at
its fundamental frequency. In addition there are undesirable multiples of that same
frequency called harmonics. These higher frequency "harmonics" may be
removed from the fundamental by use of a mechanical device called a Waffle Iron filter.
A Waffle Iron filter is reflective by design and is a corrugated, varying
impedance, waveguide filter with longitudinal slots which provide attenuation to all modes
containing harmonic power.
Waffle Iron units have passband fractional bandwidths of
10-20%. Stop band attenuation is typically greater than 60 dB from the second
through the fourth harmonic of the fundamental frequency.
Insertion loss and VSWR in the passband are minimal providing
maximum transmission of power to the antenna. Waffle Iron designs are currently
available in waveguide sizes from WR650 through WR42
